Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
