New research reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying these treatments must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
