Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
